Overview

The Nomad Book Weight was born out of a desire to have a no fuss, packable book weight while traveling. To that end the Nomad begins with a high quality leather strap mated to our signature solid brass and copper bars for weight (which will also take on a beautiful patina over time). All Nomads utilize solid brass or copper binding posts and fastening hardware, either snap or button head stud. 

Leather

All custom Nomads feature Italian Vachetta leather, which we've found to be just the right balance between firmness and suppleness. We're particularly fond of the beauty of the underside color and texture, commonly referred to as 'roughout' leather. The edges feature a soft bevel, but we don't burnish (smooth) the edge, as the transition from the cut edge to the roughout side is quite attractive on this leather in particular. 

We've also found that with the repeated folding of the Nomad that burnished edges tend to lose their smoothness, effectively reverting back to the natural, grained edge. Paints and sealers could minimize this, but they too tend to crack and otherwise deteriorate over time. In keeping with our ethos, we went the route we feel ages most elegantly.

Closures

Both closures are solid brass or copper, and both work very well. I prefer the aesthetic and physical working of the button myself, but the snap closure tends to be a bit easier to fasten, particularly if you deal with arthritis. Particularly with the button, as the leather is worked and it softens the closure system becomes easier to manipulate. We intentionally like them a bit tight from the start so they're just right as they're broken in – like a baseball glove. 

Other Notes

The weights are solid bars of brass or copper and the whole works comes in at a bit under a pound. Anti-slip pads on the bottoms of the weights are just grippy enough to keep things in place but not so grippy as to harm the pages.

Keep in mind that natural brass and copper will tarnish in time and lose their brightness. Periodic cleaning with a high quality metal cleaner is recommended if the brighter finish is desired, but not recommended with this product as the cleaner may stain the leather strap.
