Custom Writewell Desk

Custom built Writewells are made to order and will generally ship within three weeks of ordering.

The Writewell is our take on the classic portable desk with the addition of what we think are a few unique touches of our own. You'll notice straight away the Penwells integrated into the top surface–our signature product that makes using your capped pens handy. The Writewell can be configured with up to four Penwells and each Penwell can fit multiple size foam inserts for a wide range of tool compatibility. The Standard sized insert can even be flipped over to fit a standard sized pencil. A FREBO foam removal tool is included for your convenience in doing this or for rearranging different sized inserts among the Penwells.

In the center near the top our Miscellany Niche can be optioned. The niche is designed to fit our Curiously Heavy Book Weight perfectly, but it also works well to hold additional pens or pencils or any small accessories you enjoy having close at hand. We also offer the brass adorned weight from our Bookfellow weight and rest combo if a bit more brass accent is desired.

The Pencil Nook is a hidden compartment which allows you to always have a writing utensil at hand. The brass door is slid open with a finger and with a gentle tip of the Writewell the pencil or pen will slide out. The opening is 0.5" in diameter and extends 8" into the Writewell top. The Pencil Nook can be had either on the right or left hand side of the Writewell. In the event you would like additional nooks or the placement won't work for your use, please contact us for a custom configuration.

The Reader's Kit is composed of a solid brass rest with a clear acrylic page holder. The rest slides in and out of the Writewell which is how it accommodates a wide range of book sizes. Fully extended the kit has an approximate opening size of 2.25" (57 mm). The acrylic page holder slips into a slot in the underside of the wood top and can be easily removed if it isn't needed. Either the rest or page holder can be used as a stand for tablets, phones, or e-readers as well. All Writewells are made to fit the Reader's Kit so it can be added as an accessory at any time.

We offer a number of rollstop options. For a permanent rollstop we have both solid walnut and solid brass. We also offer walnut and brass drop rollstops which can be lifted for use or lowered out of the way when you'd like a completely unimpeded writing surface. These rollstops don't extend the full width of the top in order to leave a bit of clearance for one's arms and wrists. The fixed rollstops extend 3/8" (9.5 mm) from the top surface and the Drop Rollstop extends 1/4" (6.4 mm).

The Writewell is made from solid black walnut and solid brass components for durability and longevity. The writing surface tops are made in Omaha, NE where they join a number of other raw materials in our South Dakota shop and are lovingly fabricated (mostly by hand) into finished Writewells. Our products are designed to use and pass down, so with that in mind we choose materials that will hold up to that requirement. All brass surfaces are uncoated and will patina over time, adding to the character and beauty of the Writewell. As the main component is wood and wood has a way of accommodating itself to different environments, we include felt pads that can be used to stabilize any rocking of the Writewell when set on a hard surface. All Writewells are checked on a true level surface and we correct any deviations prior to final finishing and assembly, but it still may be that your Writewell changes ever so slightly from our shop to your home.
