For Penwell Classic, Craftsman, Craftsman Mini, and the Writewell:

The XS insert will accommodate cap diameters in the range of 0.250" to 0.500". 

The Standard insert will accommodate cap diameters in the range of 0.375" to 0.750" and can be reversed to accommodate pencils or small pens. In this orientation the opening is approximately 0.250" and tapers to 0.625".

The XL insert will accommodate cap diameters in the range of 0.625" to 0.750". This is for those folks who tend to use large pens often, as it fits the big ones more comfortably than our Standard foam.

The FREBO tool, short for Foam Removal and Emergency Bottle Opener, is your best bet for removing the foam inserts in the Penwell Craftsman, Craftsman Mini, and Writewell. These inserts need to be pulled out from the top (rather than pushed out from behind), and with the tool they can be hooked from the bottom and worked up. The tool is only necessary when switching between foam sizes...or accessing a bottled libation in a dire situation.

Keep in mind the clip design and shape of the writing instrument when considering the fitment, as a tapered body can fit much differently than a body with a square or blunt end.

For Penwell Traveler:

The XS is designed for pencils, styluses, and small pens not much larger than 0.375"

The Standard insert will accommodate cap diameters in the range of 0.500" to 0.625" for clipless pens, 0.500" to 0.750" for clipped pens.
